The CDC is asking hospitals to submit COVID-19 data to its new centralized National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) COVID-19 Module.
Asolva has reacted quickly to the COVID-19 pandemic and created a tool to help streamline the process of compiling, tracking and reporting COVID-19 data. The CDC’s reporting criteria are already incorporated into the tool so hospitals can make their daily submissions easily, accurately, and without juggling multiple spreadsheets.
If your organization is already using Asolva’s Medici cloud-based system for antibiotic utilization reporting, know that our COVID-19 application works the same way. As with Medici, our new COVID-19 tool can be adopted right away with no startup implementation required. Your hospital can adopt it immediately. It will work with any EHR system.
- Smaller hospitals (such as Critical Access Hospitals): Use an Asolva web application to enter COVID-19 cases each day. The web application will then calculate everything for NHSN reporting. Critical Access Hospitals that are existing Asolva customers are being offered the web application at no charge.
- Larger hospitals (with some IT reporting capability): Import modified versions of daily census files for NHSN reporting.
What You Need to Know About NHSN’s COVID-19 Module
Hospitals are being requested to submit the following to NHSN’s COVID-19 Module every day:
- Patients with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 diagnoses
- Current use and availability of hospital beds and mechanical ventilators
- Healthcare worker staffing
- Supply status and availability
The important statistics will then be shared with local and state health departments and used to help guide the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ emergency response.
Unfortunately, for many, it can be burdensome to track and calculate these figures and to do so accurately. As just one example, even distinguishing between confirmed versus suspected cases can be challenging. An added complication is the request to report new cases daily, which requires safeguards to prevent double-counting. Hospital staff such as infection preventionists may need to comb through information technology reports and conduct individual chart reviews to track and document all the relevant data while also waiting for and recording positive and negative test results – all this at a time when their attention and energy is likely needed elsewhere. Which is exactly why we’ve created our easy to use, cloud-based COVID-19 application.
Our COVID-19 Commitment
Asolva is committed to supporting healthcare institutions and workers during these unprecedented times. Reliable data is foundational to addressing this health crisis and we’re here to help. We’ve been helping hospitals with their antibiotic resistance reporting to the CDC for many years. It’s only natural that we leverage our experience and frameworks to fight COVID-19, too.
Although the CDC guidelines are continuously evolving, rest assured we are staying up-to-date for you. Our COVID-19 reporting solution is now commercially available..
And because we believe no facility should be left without streamlined reporting capabilities due to financial resource issues, we will be offering a free version of our COVID-19 module to critical access hospitals that are already Asolva customers. If you have any questions, please contact us. We’re happy to help and look forward to working with you soon.
